If you think that your Garage door is looking tired, old, or not working as it should you may be having the dilemma of do i get it replaced or just repair it?.

This is a common thought process for most people. We don't think there's never a right time to spend money if your not wanting to, and with garage doors being a minefield to most people outside of the industry it will often bring up more questions in someones mind.

Our advise to any possible customer would always be, don't be forced into a situation of doing something you may not want to do. Garage door repairs are 99% cheaper than a replacement, this being said if there are a few factors that need repairing on a door it could mount up to a similar price as having a new door installed. Either way you should always feel comfortable in the decision you decide upon.

Reasons to repair
  • Costs/Affordability
  • Speed of repair
  • Minor repair that would not warrant replacing a door for.
  •  Temporary repair whist waiting for new door
Reasons to replace

  • Costs outway the price of a repairs
  • You may want to freshen up the look of your home with a stylish new Garage door
  • You may want to save on your energy bills, with an insulated more energy efficient door
  • You may want to add value to your home
  • You may want make your door automated ( some older doors not compatible)
  • You may just want a different style, type e.g Roller door, sectional garage door, up and over or even a side hinged garage door

Hear from one of our happy customers!

Before and after of one of our recent garage door installations… a Hormann medium-ribbed sectional garage door in a jet-black woodgrain finish.

Our customer replaced a Hormann up and over door with this upgrade. We caught up with him after to hear why he chose DPG Garage Doors, why he chose that particular door and to ask the all-important question ‘are they happy with the end result’. Here’s what he had to say…

Why did you choose DPG Garage Doors?

“We had our old garage door repaired by Darren at DPG Garage Doors initially and I was impressed with the quick turn out at short notice. So much so that I then enquired about a new garage door.

Why did you choose a sectional door to replace your up and over?

“The better security and cleaner lines of the sectional door is what made us choose that option. Also the fact that a sectional garage door doesn’t take up valuable parking space. We chose the jet-black finish to match our front door so it was in keeping with our property.”

Are you happy with the end result?

“Yes I’m very happy with the end result and attention to detail from Darren and team.”

Would you recommend DPG Garage Doors?

“Yes, I would recommend DPG Garage doors. We’ve been happy with the professional and friendly service from start to finish.”

Thinking of a sectional garage door? Here’s the lowdown on this design:

These doors are built in panel sections that open and slide upwards, and then curve back into the garage on horizontal rails. The great thing about these doors is the space that they save. There's no loss of driveway space in front of the garage, and they provide full opening drive-through width, giving extra room for larger vehicles.

In a nutshell:

- Fantastic security and strength

- Great choice of insulation options and rubber weather seals help to keep heat in and water out

- Great for short driveways or homeowners with larger vehicles

- Stylish and extremely well engineered

- Vertical opening - Park right up against the door and operate

- Available in large dimensions

- Can be operated manually or with an electric motor

There are a few options when it comes to purchasing a new garage door and it's important that you choose the right type for you but "Where do I start" we hear you ask!

We've created a quick guide for you here and on our garage door page and our friendly team will guide and advise along the way too.

Up & over
This one-piece panel design is a popular choice. Just as its name suggests, it goes up and over into your garage opening. It tends to be a more cost effective option and there's lots of choice when it comes to design from traditional Georgian style to contemporary lines.

Sectional
These doors are built in panel sections that open and slide upwards, and then curve back into the garage on horizontal rails. Perfect for adding a motor, the great thing about these doors is the space that they save as an alternative to Up & Over doors. There's no loss of driveway space in front of the garage, and they provide full opening drive-through width, giving extra room for larger vehicles. In the right design, these doors can add an ultra-stylish finish to your home.

Roller
Roller doors consist of insulated aluminium laths that lift vertically, but rather than going back into the garage space, they roll into a box above the opening. These doors combine a space-saving design with the convenience of an electrically operated door. They can be fitted inside, inbetween and outside the garage opening.

Side-hinged
Opening like traditional double swing doors, side-hinged doors are perfect for garages that require regular access by homeowners as they are easier and quicker to open and close. They open outwards and most are manufactured with equal sized doors. The doors are equipped with shoot bolt latches for extra security and weather seals and you can chose to have a lever handle inside and out or for added security an outside knob is also available.

You can read more about the benefits of each garage door type right here on our website.

Every year, we have our appliances around the home, cars and other expensive purchases serviced to make sure they stay in tip top condition... it’s just as important that you look after your garage door too – especially during the winter months.

A yearly service could be the difference between a small repair and needing a new door and will make sure it stays running as smoothly as it did the day it was fitted.

As well as a yearly service, there are some things that you can do to keep on top of your garage door maintenance this winter, here are our top tips:

1. Look and listen:   As you open your garage door, watch it in action. If something doesn’t seem right – then it won’t be!

It might look wonky as it opens, might be heavier than usual to lift (if you have a manual door), you might hear the sound of metal grinding rather than its usual sound. Check your mechanisms from the inside as you open it – look out for uneven or over-stretched springs, cables frayed, snapped or not ravelling around the cone evenly. All of these issues point to problems with your springs, cones and cables and if you keep operating it like this, it will only get worse and cost you more money to sort it.

The most important element to check is your timber frame as this holds the weight of your garage door (and they’re heavy!) and if there are any problems with it, you could find it dropping on you as you open it.

2. Keep it clean:   It speaks for itself that when you’ve spent a lot of money on a shiny new door, you’ll want to keep it looking and working in the way that it should! Winter weather can be harsh on your door so be sure to clean it regularly with mild soapy water. As well as cleaning your door, make sure you clean the tracks and runners too – these need to stay clean and free from debris – this can build up over time and will affect how well your door opens and closes.

3. Lubricate and keep it moving:   When it’s cold outside, moving parts can start to stick. You may not be using your door as much too so it’s important that you open and close it two to three times a week and lubricate the rollers, spring bar, springs and tracks with a garage door lubricant (WD40 will also do the trick) – DO NOT USE grease! Grease clogs up, holds dust and will become abrasive and therefore will damage your spindles and running gear over time.

4. Consider a weather seal:   New garage doors come fitted with side weather seals which is perfect for winter. However you might want to consider adding a weather seal along the bottom of your door to prevent rain and snow getting underneath inside your garage – you don’t want it freezing shut!

5. Insulation:   Not all garage doors are insulated. If you’re considering a new door at this time of the year or live in a cold part of the world, a sectional or roller might be the best option for you as these come insulated as standard.

What a garage door service involves with DPG Garage Doors:

• Door visually checked over by our experienced team
• All moving parts lubricated and cleaned
• Locks checked
• Fixings checked
• Frame checked
• If parts needed – parts supplied and fitted
• All for £69.00 (plus parts if required)

As with all trades there are many garage door and lock companies out there so where do you start?

We pride ourselves on being completely honest with each and every customer. For example, you might think your garage door is broken and therefore you need a new one, but that often isn't the case and we'll tell you so, saving you £s where we can.

Here are our top tips for finding a reputable supplier:

1.   Read reviews about previous work - there should be lots of happy customers singing their praises. If there are no reviews, alarm bells should be ringing. We love to hear from our customers after each and every job.

2. Do your research - check out the company's website and social media pages to see previous work for yourself.

3. Meet your installer in person - first impressions go a long way - from the professional-looking set-up through to the manner of the installer.

4. Do they ask for money upfront? Be weary! You shouldn't pay for any job until it's complete and you're 100% happy with the workmanship and quality finish.

5. Installer's knowledge - dare we say it... the customer isn't always right! You might have in mind what you want but it might not be the most cost effective or suitable for your garage. Some companies may just go with it but you should feel reassured if an installer doesn't, and instead, explains other options with reasons why.

6. Call out fee - there's no right or wrong here, many companies charge and some don't. We don't! We'll come out to you free of charge, and will cost the job accordingly once we're onsite.

7. Quotes - we always recommend that you get at least three quotes when looking for a new garage door. This gives you reassurance that you're not being over-charged or paying too little and not getting the quality finish. A good reputable company would welcome this.

8. Ask questions - no question is a silly one!
